FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • WHAT IS SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY(SSDI)?
    SSDI is like any other insurance that you pay a premium for. You have to work long enough (paying for your premium) to receive SSDI. In some cases there are certain family members that my also be able to receive benefits.
  • WHAT IS SSI?
    SSI pays benefits to those who have low or no income. They are considered people in need. You must meet the definition of a disablity.
  • WHAT IS CONSIDERED A DISABILITY?
    The person should not be engaged in any substanital gainful activity and the person's condition should have lasted twelve continuous months or be expected to last tweleve months.
  • AM I ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?
    You must meet the definition of a disability to qualify and have enough work credits or be in need.
  • HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET SSDI/SSI?
    The time can vary. It can take up to 18 -24 months depending on various factors, such as, receipt of your medical records, the type or kind of disabilty claim, or being sent to a consultative examination.
  • WHAT IS AN APPEAL?
    If you were denied SSDI/SSI you can appeal your claim. Generally, you can appeal within 60 days from the date you received your denial letter. There appeals that are available are at the reconsideration level, hearing level, Appeals Council and Federal court review.
